What is ovarian drilling is?

It's also known as multiperforation or laparoscopic ovarian diathermy,

Let's first take about its history

Ovarian drilling used in the treatment of PCOS for the first time in 1984 and proved to be a 

safe and effective surgery.

After intervention of laparoscopic electrosurgical ovarian drilling was successful in CC-   

resistant patients that also called  clomiphene  citratein 1984 

OVARIAN DRILLING is a technique or to be more specific,

it's a surgical technique depend

on using punctures to puncture the membrane that surround the outer space of ovaries.

It might be done by using different methods as follow:

1) Using punctures to perforate or puncture the membrane surrounding the ovaries and this help in improving and treating the problem of poly cystic ovary syndrome and also 

increase incidence of ovulation.

2) Using laser technique which also has the same effect as the punctures, it perforates the surrounding membrane that surrounds the ovaries and by the way it will increase the incidence of the ovulation and hence treat the poly cystic ovary syndrome.

The laparoscopic technique reduces the post-surgical operations problems like ovarian 

adhesions which is not a good effect and lead to Un-successful surgery.

The ovarian drilling or what also known as: multiperforationor laparoscopic . is an alternative method to the therapeutic use of The oral drug, clomiphene citrate.

And clomiphene citrate is the first line therapy or as we called the DOC (drug of choice) for the treatment of poly cystic ovary syndrome

.

After ovarian drilling the incidence of ovulation and if the female didn't get pregnant after 6 months of the ovarian drilling so then doctors will start to introduce oral therapy and 

medication.

Is ovarian drilling a 100% safe surgery?

This is a very good question that everyone should know as there is no thing have no some 

risks.

Risks of ovarian drilling: are as follow: pelvic adhesion formation, gas embolism, , premature ovarian failure, long-term ovarian dysfunction,pneumothorax,hemorrhage,  adhesion formation, infertility  hyper stimulation and multiple births.

But also as well it may minimize the risk of decreased ovarian reserve (DOR), which can impinge upon fertility and also iatrogenic adhesion formation.

Is there are only risks from ovarian drilling of the surgical intervention?

No it also have advantages and that's why physician use it as treatment of poly cystic ovary 

syndrome.

So what's the advantage of ovarian drilling or surgical interventions for treatment of poly cystic ovary syndrome?

Ovarian drilling has proved its efficacy in lowering the rates of multi-fetal gestation  and  of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome. 

The advantages of ovarian drilling surgical procedure also include its singular treatment, as 

opposed to several trials of ovulation inductions.

Some other advantage of ovarian drilling is that its cost-effectiveness and that it can be done or performed as an day care procedure.
